Botanicals in Colored Pencil
Program led by: Kathie Miranda
This is a 4-session workshop held weekly on Tuesdays
Class Dates: May 31, June 7, 14, 21 2022 via Zoom
Class Time: 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Explore the exquisite diversity of the plant world using specimens from your local market or green grocer. Botanicals often display complex shapes, forms, patterns and textures that challenge the artist. Learn how to simplify this complexity in order to draw them accurately, while maintaining a three-dimensional look in your work.
Draw a new specimen each week such as cacti, fruits, vegetables, exotic blooms, and more. The instructor shares tips for advanced graphite techniques including drawing with an eraser; using negative space for impact; and inventing pencil strokes to mimic textures observed in plants.
Learn about proportional values; keying a drawing; and simplifying perspective to see your work advance to higher levels of accuracy. The class provides valuable insights for drawing in graphite as well as a foundation for further study in colored pencil and watercolor.
Completion of Introduction to Botanical Illustration or similar drawing experience is recommended by not required.
The structure of our Zoom class meetings is similar to our live, 3-hour classroom experience: live demonstrations followed by time to work on your project “together in class”. There is ample opportunity for questions and feedback from the instructor during class. A private photo-sharing group folder is set up on Google Drive where we can download and view our completed projects. Drive details are available in the first class.
