Introduction to Botanical Illustration

This program runs on Tuesday mornings for 4 weeks.

Class Dates: Dec. 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd

Class Time: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm 

The instructor shares her entire approach to composing an idea from start to finish.  Demonstrations and simple exercises emphasize key principles and drawing methods.  Learn to use graphite pencil in a variety of ways to achieve accuracy and the look of three-dimensions that makes plants look fleshy. 

Learn to create a traditional botanical plate using live, seasonal flowers as inspiration. .  The workshop begins with detailed studies of flower parts, and ends with a final piece well underway. Learn the hallmark botanical techniques of precise tonal application and detailing.

Guests are provided instruction, drawing boards, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, paper, tape, etc. 

Guest are responsible for bringing their own 

- Recommended Book (please borrow from library before purchasing): Botanical Illustration for Beginners: A Step-by-Step Guide, Meriel Thurstan and Rosie Martin, Batsford, 2015

- Small Soft Brush to clean eraser crumbs: a make-up brush or bird feather works well!

- Cutting Tools:  X-Acto #1 Knife with #11 blade and small pair of scissors

- 12” Plastic Gridded Ruler - Westcott/C-Thru #B-60

- Divider Tool:  for measuring - Blick Masterbow (looks like a compass but with 2 needle points)

- Erasing Shield: flexible stainless steel with shaped cut-outs - Alvin.

- Magnifying Glass
